OFWs gikan Libya kuhaon sa European firms

DILI na angay mabalaka ang mga overseas Filipino workers nga naapektuhan sa giyera sa
Libya tungod kay mag-abri og trabaho ang pipila ka European companies alang kanila.

Matud pa sa Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), ang European Chamber of

Ang gihiusang Foreign Chambers of the Philippines ug Federation of Filipino Chinese
Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) interesado usab mokuha sa mga OFW
evacuees gikan sa Libya nga mohaum sa bakanteng posisyon. (ecbPIABohol)

Gov’t. clarifies no deployment ban of workers to Korea

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) clarifies on Sunday on the issue that
there is a current deployment ban of OFWs to South Korea as reported earlier, as she says
there will be only a delay, according to local news sites.

In a statement released by Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz, she clarified that the
government did not impose a ban for OFW’s bound for South Korea, but rather delayed the
schedule of the 55-member of OFW, which was moved from November 30 to December 7,
2010.

The decision to ban the deployment of Filipinos to South Korea, where tension has been high
following last week’s artillery exchange between the two Koreas, will still have to be made
pending a review of the security situation there, Baldoz said.

“The government team, headed by Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo
and which the President had directed to assess the situation, had recommended this decision
as a matter of caution and prudence,” she said.

“Any further decision on the deployment of OFWs to South Korea will be reviewed after the
team of Ambassador Roy Cimatu, which has been ordered to go to South Korea to assess
the situation there, has submitted a report,” Baldoz added.

There are sixty thousand Filipino nationals in South Korea and only nine are working in North
Korea. Of the nine Filipino nationals, five are working for the United Nations, and four are
working for a foreign international tobacco company. (PIA)

More jobs seen in 4th quarter

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Thursday assured that employment opportunities are brighter for jobseekers with the coming holiday season.

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said various industries are expected to hire more workers in the last three months of the year as commercial establishments nationwide prepare for Christmas.

Even poor but deserving students who are on Christmas vacation can work temporarily in various business firms and government offices nationwide as provided under the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES).

Employers will pay 60 percent of the students’ minimum wage while the government would shoulder the remaining 40 percent. The working students are also entitled to other benefits and privileges under the Labor Code.

Republic Act 9547 or the SPES Amendatory Law was passed last year to encourage employers engaged in small and medium enterprises to hire poor but deserving students so they will have the opportunity to earn more during vacation. (PIA)

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reported on Wednesday that the number of jobless Filipinos had declined by 200,000 as the country recovers from the effects of the global financial crisis.

DOLE said data from the National Statistics Office (NSO) showed that unemployed persons nationwide dropped to 2.7 million in July compared to the 2.9 million jobless workers recorded during the same period last year.

Based on results of the NSO’s latest Labor Force Survey (LFS), male workers account for 62.6 percent of the total number of unemployed citizens while a majority or 52.5 percent belong to 15 to 24-years age group.

About one-third (32.5 percent) of the unemployed were high school graduates, 22.7 percent were college undergraduates, and 20.5 percent were college graduates.

Labor officials said the lingering effects of the financial crisis have increased the number of jobless Filipinos last year with Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, and Quezon (CALABARZON) region bearing the brunt. (PIA)
