This year’s theme is “Shared Waters, Shared Solutions: Coming
Together as One for the World’s Centre of Marine Life—The Coral
Triangle.”
The event is envisioned to be an annual, open-sourced activity that
brings together individuals, organizations, private sector and
governments on one special day of the year to shed light on ocean
conservation and the numerous ways to protect and conserve the
Coral Triangle.
Similar activities will be conducted in El Nino Palawan by the dive
shops association there as well as in Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua
New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Timor Leste.
Activities include beach clean-ups; sustainable seafood dinners
and exhibitions; bazaars; and beach parties, among others—all
carrying the message of ocean conservation under the overall
banner of the Coral Triangle Day.

The First Coral Triangle Initiative Day aims to build a critical
mass of supporters for the Coral Triangle on the individual,
organizational, corporate, and government levels by using fun
ways for people in the region to take action.
The Coral Triangle is a geographical term so named as it
refers to a roughly triangular area of the tropical marine waters
of Indonesia, Malaysia, Timor Leste, Papua Ne Guinea,
Solomon Islands and the Philippines that contain at least 500
species of reef-building corals.
It also called the “Amazon of the seas” and covers 5.7 million
square kilometers of ocean waters. Its biological resources
sustain the lives of over 120 million people. The Philippines is
at the apex of the coral triangle.
Lapu Lapu municipal waters is found in a rare geological area
in the Coral Triangle called Danajon Double Barrier Reef.
