Supporters march to protest delays in RH voting
Supporters of the “Reproductive Health and Population Development Act of 2009″ marched from Sandigan Bayan, Batasan Complex to the South Gate Entrance of the House of Representatives, Quezon City.
Pregnant women led the march along with other leaders who have been advocating for the passage of the bill since the start of the 14th Congress.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Angsioco, Secretary General of the Reproductive Health Advocacy Network (RHAN) is saddened by recent developments. “Bishops are harassing lawmakers who are supportive of the reproductive health bill,” said Angsioco. “They are talking to lawmakers and asking them not to attend sessions so there will be no quorum,” Angsioco said. “Some of the authors are even asked to retract or else leaders of the Catholic church will campaign against them, specifically in their own district, Angsioco added.
Angsioco calls on the Bishops, “please allow Congress to do its work, and do not intimidate our lawmakers. Let them do their work and for heaven’s sake be fair.” She also called on lawmakers to approve the measure now.”
She reminded lawmakers that 11 mothers are dying every day due to pregnancy and pregnancy-related complications. “Your vote for the bill will save lives,” Angsioco concluded.” (RHAN)
