Local tourism coming strong, says DOT
Baguio City (January 9)– The Department of Tourism declares that there is a boost in local tourism despite the weakening of international tourism industries. DOT Secretary Oscar Palayabyab said that in a random sampling conducted by their agency two years ago, 11 to 16 million local tourists were recorded nationwide.
Palayabyab however admitted to the need of scaling down the five million foreign tourist arrival to a more realistic target until the global economy stabilizes.
Topping the list of tourist destinations are Camarines Sur, Cebu and Baguio. Despite the calamities that passed, the number of tourists grew during the long holidays.
Palayabyab encourages the development of local tourist spots to increase the Philippines’ capacity for more tourist arrivals.
