Clottey still overweight; Pacquiao ready at 146

Grapevine, Texas — Ghanaian challenger Joshua Clottey is still overweight.

The suspicion that Clottey was still overweight two days before the fight was confirmed when the Ghanaian fighter was spotted by Team Pacquiao member Roger Fernandez jogging at the convention hall while wearing a thermal suit for 45 minutes and then skipping rope.

Clottey was at that time accompanied by four other team mates. Roger narrated, “Masama ang tingin nila sa akin, pero hindi ako umalis (They threw dagger looks at me, but i didn’t leave.)”.

However, at the final press conference Wednesday, Clottey’s Chief trainer Lenny DeJesus claimed that Clottey had made the weight in his bid for Pacquiao’s World Boxing Organization welterweight crown.

“AVATAR” Rules Box office

AVATAR -- another top grossing film by Director James Cameron

AVATAR -- another top grossing film by Director James Cameron

Los Angeles — Science-fiction epic “Avatar” boomed way past the $500-million mark at the North American box office this weekend, pushing its way towards an all-time record.

Box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said James Cameron’s groundbreaking 3-D spectacular added to its haul over the four-day Martin Luther King Holiday weekend with another $54.4 million.

In North Amerca, the movie has earned 504.9 million dollars in only 32 days, and is now 3rd to 2008 Batman sequel “The Dark Knight” ($533.3 million) and “Titanic” ($600.8 million).

“The records are starting to look inevitable now – Cameron will end up sinking his own ship,” quipped Exhibitor Relations chief analyst Jeff Bock in reference to “Avatar’s” pursuit of “Titanic.”

The box office numbers have moved beyond the usual demographics. People who would never normally go to see a science fiction film or a film in 3-D are going to see ‘Avatar’ because they want to be part of the conversation.

“And it is also attracting repeat business — people going to see it two, three, four or five times. That is extremely unusual for a film released outside the summer season.”

This weekend’s stellar performance came as “Avatar” celebrated its best drama and best director accolades at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, confirming the film’s status as an Oscars front-runner.

Donaire wins by Unanimous Decision

Nonito Donaire defeated Rafael Concepcion on Saturday night(Sunday morning here) to take the WBA interim title in his super flyweight debut. Judge Max De Luca scored the fight 117-111, Duane Ford had it 115-113, and Jerry Roth called it 116-112; letting Donaire win by Unanimous Decision.

Concepcion, who earned the respect of the crowd for going the distance, weighed in four pounds over the 115-pound limit, a violation that cost him 20 percent of his $65,000 purse. Even with a win, he wouldn’t have been awarded the championship.

During the fight, Donaire even hurt his right hand landing an upper cut in the early round. “But no matter how messed up or sprained it was, I am here to fight,” he said.

On the undercard, Steven Luevano retained his WBO featherweight title after being floored by challenger Bernabe Concepcion following the seventh round bell. Concepcion, who was trailing on two of the three judges’ scorecards, was disqualified. Mark Mellligen defeated Ernesto Zepeda via 4th round TKO, 2:40. And Anthony Peterson defeated Luis Arceo via Unanimous Decision for 10 Rounds.

Dr. Manny Pacquaio: Pacman’s Doctorate (Honoris Causa)

The Southwestern University will award Manny Pacquaio a degree Doctorate in Human Kinetics, “Honoris Causa.” This was officially announced by the University’s administration, on which the conferment will be done on February 18, 2009.

“Honoris causa” is a Latin phrase which means “for the sake of the honor” and it is an academic degree conferred by a university in which the usual requirements such as matriculation, residence, lessons and the passing of examinations are waived. Usually the degree is conferred as a way of honoring a distinguished person’s contributions to a specific field of endeavor or to the society in general. The university often derives benefits by association and alliance with the person being honored.

Human Kinetics is a study on sports, fitness and health. It aims to provide a dynamic environment that supports academic excellence in sports, recreation and physical activity through inspired teaching, creative research and meaningful achievements.

Pacquiao has practiced the general learning in Human Kinetics in his quest for glory in the world boxing arena, beating top fighters such as Oscar de la Hoya, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez.

The theory which was always associated with the usual studying and learning procedures was converted into practical means. And the practical way was transformed into winning forms that makes him the number one boxer of the world.
